NSURS FAQs
What is NSURS?
NSURS is a yearly research symposium hosted by the School of Natural Sciences. NSURS is open to undergraduates in all Natural Sciences disciplines who would like to present research produced on- or off-campus. Participants present their research via poster and receive feedback from peers, faculty and graduate students.
Who can participate in NSURS?
NSURS is open to any Natural Sciences-affiliated undergraduate who would like to present research. If you think that Natural Sciences is the natural home for your research, then you are welcome to register for NSURS. If you have questions about your affiliation or project, please message us at nsurs@rice.edu.
Why should I participate in NSURS?
NSURS is an opportunity to gain valuable experience in presenting your research and learning how to communicate your interests to a range of audiences. You will also receive feedback on your research and presentation from peers, faculty and graduate students. This is an amazing opportunity for students to share all of their hard work to broader audiences.
How do I sign up?
Sign up on the NSURS Registration Page before March 8, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. You will be asked to submit a project title, abstract and contact information for your research mentor.
Can I present research conducted with a faculty member from an outside university?
Yes, as long as the research is natural-sciences related and was conducted sometime between May of the previous year and this April.
Are there dimensions requirements for my poster?
Yes. Your poster, including any borders, attachments or other associated elements, may not be larger than 3 feet tall by 4 feet wide.
My research is in the early stages. Can I still participate?
Yes. Presenting at NSURS is a valuable way to practice your science communication skills, receive helpful feedback from judges and attendees about your ongoing work and connect with other undergraduate researchers in the Natural Sciences.
I don't know how to begin my abstract. Who can I speak to for help?
Visit the Presentation Guidelines and Workshops page for resources and information on our How to Write an Abstract Workshop.
Why does my mentor need to approve my abstract in order for me to present?
This is a public venue open to Rice and non-Rice guests. It is important that your mentor is aware of the content and that unpublished results are not disseminated prematurely. Please consult your mentor in advance to ensure that your abstract and presentation are approved for sharing.
Can I revise my abstract after submission? What if there have been major developments in my work?
You will not be able to revise your abstract after submission. You should, however, present your most current results at the symposium.
Can I invite family, friends or other faculty to NSURS?
Yes! We are happy to welcome all members of the Rice community, friends and family to the event.
What should I wear to NSURS?
You should dress in business casual, but do not feel like you need to buy something new! Wear something nice you already have in your closet.
I'm a Rice student who isn't presenting at NSURS. Should I attend the symposium?
Yes! NSURS is a great chance to see and learn about different research opportunities available in the Natural Sciences while supporting your friends and celebrating the achievements of your peers. We also welcome non-presenting attendees to serve as a peer judge by filling out this short registration form.
