In a world where scientific understanding is more important than ever, Teaching Professor Scott Solomon and Assistant Dean Lauren Kapcha are helping students bridge the gap between complex research and public understanding through a growing science communication program in the School of Natural Sciences.

Their signature Public Science Communication Seminar brings in speakers ranging from best-selling authors, museum curators, social media science influencers, podcasters, documentary filmmakers, vaccine developers and more. Students reflect on what makes science resonate with the public and explore how communication through various media can shape understanding. Events throughout the year, including hands-on workshops, field trips, panel presentations and lightning talk competitions, provide students with real-world experience transforming complex topics into compelling narratives.

Solomon and Kapcha are expanding this foundation with plans for an undergraduate certificate, internship opportunities and an introductory course focused on best practices in science communication.

The goal is to empower students to speak clearly, connect authentically and confidently use their voices to share the wonder and critical importance of science for all.
