Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP) Director Anne Papakonstantinou ’69 ’71 has dedicated her career to advancing mathematics education at the local, state and national levels.

A Houston native and HISD graduate, Papakonstantinou earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Rice and a doctorate in mathematics curriculum and instruction from the University of Houston on her way to an award-winning, 26-year HISD teaching career. She joined the newly established RUSMP in 1987 as a master teacher and has directed the project since 2000.

Founded to connect Rice’s mathematics research community and Houston-area educators, RUSMP has become a national leader in K-12 mathematics through its high-quality teacher development and student enrichment programs and its contributions to research on mathematics teaching and learning.

Papakonstantinou leads a dedicated team that has expanded RUSMP’s reach. Today, the center conducts research, produces curricula, audits math program effectiveness, and offers long-term programs, intensive summer sessions and networking opportunities for educators, administrators and students.
