Madeline Belknap

Major: Biosciences - Biochemistry Concentration

As a child, junior Biosciences major Madeline Belknap was fascinated by the wands and wizardry of the Harry Potter world. “Hermione Granger made learning cool and embodied girls as confident, capable scientists,” she said. Now, as a member of the outreach group Fun with Chemistry, Madeline is able to “be Hermione” and share the magic of chemistry with Houston’s youth.

Madeline first learned about Fun with Chemistry as a prospective student applying to Rice. “I even wrote about my interest in joining the group in my admission essays to Rice,” she said. She joined the group during her first semester at Rice and has been avidly involved ever since.

In her role as the Student Assistant Manager, Madeline serves as both an administrator and an ambassador for the club. She does everything from maintaining lab spaces, preparing and leading community events and planning educator workshops to managing social media platforms and supporting volunteer recruitment. “This year, we are looking forward to presenting at the new Matter and Motion Chemistry and Physics Hall at the Museum of Natural Sciences as well as leading an Educator Workshop at the CAST Conference presented by the Science Teachers Association of Texas,” said Madeline.

With more than 100 volunteers, Fun with Chemistry brings together people from all areas of the Natural Sciences and from areas outside of the School around a shared enthusiasm for science. “Our volunteers have a variety of academic interests,” Madeline said, “yet we are united by a common goal of inspiring students and promoting DEI initiatives within STEM.”

Madeline’s deep appreciation for all fields of science also is evident in her enthusiasm for her experience as a Biosciences major with a concentration in Biochemistry. “My favorite thing about the Biosciences major is its interdisciplinary approach to the natural sciences,” she said. “Combining chemistry, biology, math, physics, health and medicine, I have gained knowledge in a variety of fields. As someone who loves chemistry, I enjoy exploring the intricate molecular processes in biology in light of the underlying chemical interactions.”

Fun with Chemistry offers a way for Madeline to combine her love of science with her passion for science communication and mentorship, all while connecting with the local community. “From narrating our shows and working with new volunteers to helping lead our educator workshops, I want to make science fun, engaging and less intimidating,” she said. Madeline’s fascination with the magic of science has come full circle. Just as a young Madeline was inspired by Hermione, she is now inspiring young boys and girls to see themselves as scientists — and perhaps as future Owls.
